Grow exponentially by taking asymmetric risks

Welcome to Unlearn Daily's second newsletter.

Today, I'm talking about my observation on how can you grow in your career exponentially. Get promoted faster, earn more and do something with a mega impact.

So it was March 2022, and I was having a beer with one of my friends - Vatsal. After all the football and cricket gossip, suddenly, the conversation drifted towards career, and one question that stuck before we could call it a day was - how does career growth happen?

We wanted to reverse engineer what worked for people and use that to fuel our careers. We started to stumble upon people's Linkedin - like Deepak Abbot (Founder of IndiaGold), Swagat Sarma (Founder of ANQ Finance) + 20 others.

We wanted one magic pill -

Do you need a personal brand? Do you need to stay in a company for 10+ years? Do you upskill yourself every year?

Surprisingly, what stood out was - everyone who has succeeded in their career, some time in their career, had taken a bet, a chance on a person or an idea when no one was willing to.

This is called asymmetric risk.

Asymmetrical risks occur when there is a likelihood that the outcome of the risk event will be either greater than or lesser than the norm.

Most successful careers are made when tough, chaotic, and challenging.

99% of people would turn their backs when asked to be a part of a team that is early, just getting started, and needs clearly defined roles. But the 1% who embrace these challenges for a sustained period are the ones who come out as winners.

So, if you want to grow in your career and become a top 1% talent, this is what you have to do. Spot opportunities with asymmetric risks, where the stakes are high but the ROI is non-linear; it's exponential.

Take a leap of faith; more often than average, you'll emerge as a winner.

If I look back at my journey - I took this leap of faith when I got this opportunity to become a CEO for a US-basedU.S. startup 👇🏻


If I look back at this, there were so many reasons to say no -

  1. I was hired on contract, not on payroll -all my employee benefits, like health insurance, taxes etc., wouldn't be there.
  2. I can be fired without a day's notice.
  3. I had to build a product for people in another country, which I have just gone to.

But I took it. Because, for me, it was an asymmetric risk with an infinite upside and limited downside.

So, now go and look for your opportunity with asymmetric risks - that is how you'll become a top 1% talent.

So, to summarise, if you want to make grow exponentially in your career-

  1. Be open to opportunities, and be present in places where these opportunities are.
  2. Look for companies just getting started and looking for their first Designer, PM, and Developer.
  3. Spot if it's an asymmetric risk. Suppose the potential upside is far higher than the downside.
  4. Grab it with both arms, and work your asses off.
  5. Stick to it for some time once you come out of it.
  6. You would have surpassed everyone you know - your friends and peers regarding career growth and money.
